Building the Case for a Diversified Engineering Workforce
Building the Case for a Diversified Engineering Workforce Building the Case for a Diversified Engineering Workforce Building the Case for a Diversified Engineering WorkforceRoma Agrawal is a structural engineer and the author of the new book Built The Hidden Stories Behind our Structures. During her 10-year career, she has designed bridges, skyscrapers, and sculptures. When shes not designing, Agrawal spends much of her time promoting engineering careers to young people, especially women. Agrawal recently spoke with Jeff OHeir about her book and the need for a wide representation of cultures and views in engineering. For the full interview, please tune into our new podcast, ASME TechCast, brought to you by the editors of ASME.org and Mechanical Engineering magazine. This is an edited version of that interview.JO Youve mentioned in the past that roughly 50% more graduates are needed in science and engineering to meet the needs of the engineering economy. Is that still the case today?RA I dont know exactly what the current numbers are but we absolutely do need to drastically increase the number of students studying science and engineering, but also going on to do science and engineering careers.JO Why does that shortage persist?RA I dont think theres a very clear answer, because we would have solved it if we knew exactly what the schwierigkeit is. But for me, I think it comes down to the awareness of engineering as a career, the fact that were not really out there in the public domain. When children watch TV, theyll see doctors and lawyers and professions like that. But I dont think people really understand what engineers do and the fact that engineers can be a huge, amazing, different range of people.JO While women receive roughly 20 percent of undergraduate engineering degrees, they represent only about 13 percent of the engineering workforce. Based on what youve seen in the workplace and in the field, why do you think that number is still so low?RA Theres a pro blem with attracting women to engineering in the first place. But then theres a larger proportion of women undergraduates who decide to pursue different careers other than engineering, even with an engineering degree, when compared to men.JO Is discrimination on the part of the employer part of the problem?RA I dont think its outright discrimination, necessarily, but I think the way engineering jobs and careers are marketed to young people needs to change. Its probably quite outdated and might not really appeal to young people in general, particularly women. Then theres the retention problem. Women drop out of the workforce at much larger rates than men do. Predictably, its around the time women are having children.JO Some people will say that great structures are still being built, beautiful things are still being designed, so why is it so important that we employ more women as engineers?RA I think its really important that people who are designing things for other people, for soci ety, should reflect society. So its not just women. Im keen to see more people from ethnic minority backgrounds. In the UK, only about 6 percent of engineers are from ethnic minority backgrounds, but in our population its more than double that. Disabilities, mental health, sexual orientation all of these things are incredibly important because they are designing for society so we must reflect for society.JO Several of the reasons why anyone whos interested in engineering should pursue a career in it are found in your new book, Built. What type of audience did you write the book for?RA My book is for everyone. Anyone whos got a little curiosity about the buildings that they live in, the bridges that they walk across, or even whats happening under their feet is the ideal audience. The whole point of the book is to appeal to people who are not engineers. Having said that, a lot of engineers have also said to me that they really enjoyed my book because of the stories, because of the fac t that Ive done all this research on the history of engineering and materials and the human beings that Ive actually put in there.Read MoreThe Impact of Tariffs on EngineeringReplicating the Ideal Gait Guides konzept of New Prosthetic FootThe Comeback of the Aluminum CanMy book is for everyone. Eat more of this one nutrient to reduce the risk of 4 major diseases
Eat more of this one nutrient to reduce the risk of 4 major diseasesEat more of this one nutrient to reduce the risk of 4 major diseasesThere may be no one magic bullet for better health, but sometimes research comes along to show just how impactful a singlenutrientcan be. A recentreviewpublished in the highly regarded medical journalThe Lancetfound that eating more of just one dietary substance led to lower rates of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and colon krebs. Was it a vitamin? A mineral? Or the ever-popularprotein? Nope. The edible element responsible for unterstellung dramatic effects was none other than that most humble of nutrientsFiber.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhat the study foundThe review inThe Lancetlooked at 135 million person-years of data from 185 studies that included over 4,600 participants. From this vast array of information, the authors determi ned that the risk of experiencing the four major diseases began to fall when people consumed 25 to 29 grams of fiber per day. Its an interesting find that seems to confirm the recommended Daily Value of fiber is spot-on at 25 grams for women (and 38 grams for men). The study also discovered that, as far as fiber for disease prevention, it seems more is better. According to its authors, Higher intakes of dietary fiber could confer even greater benefit for risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and colon cancer. In addition to these perks, people who consumed more fiber had lower body weight, systolic blood pressure, and total cholesterol. The connection between fiber and diseaseSo whats the connection between your morning bowl of raisin bran and warding off a host of scary diseases? It seems fiber plays a unique preventative role against each of four major ailments. When it comes toheart disease and stroke, fibers ability to lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol are the l ikely keys to its disease-fighting powers. The anti-inflammatory nature of fiber also makes it helpful for keeping these cardiovascular issues at bay. Fiber may affect C-reactive protein, a biomarker for inflammation linked to the risk for cardiovascular disease, says registered dietitianKarolin Saweres, RDN, LD.Fiber has a long history as a food-as-medicinetreatment for type 2 diabetes- so its not surprising getting more of it could help prevent this disease too. Fiber delays absorption of glucose and may improve insulin sensitivity, explains Saweres. These factors are key for improving blood sugar levels, the primary concern in managing diabetes. Finally, colon cancer may be the disease with the most obvious connection to fiber. We all know getting enough fiber keeps things running smoothly in the digestive department - but this may not actually be why getting enough of it can help prevent cancer of the colon. Instead, some experts have speculated that fibers impact on healthy we ight and reduced inflammation (two known factors in cancer risk) are the more likely causes.Getting more fiber in your dietWhen you think fiber, your mind may conjure up unappealing images of Grandmas prune juice and an endless stream of beans. But getting enough of this nutrient doesnt have to be a chore. Opting for plant-based protein in place of meat, adding beans or lentils to wraps, soups, or salads, and adding greens to smoothies can all help you reach your daily target. Maybe you make your afternoon snack a dedicated time for fresh fruits and veggies. Or sprinkle nuts or seeds onto salads, cereals, or your morning oatmeal.Though its best to get fiber from food sources, says Saweres, some people may benefit from a dietary supplement. If someone is a picky eater and has issues with constipation due to not getting enough fiber in their diet, then I would recommend supplements, she notes. While youre at it, dont forget the water I always recommend increasing fluid intake when inc reasing fiber intake, she advises. Can you get too much?If youre heaping on the fiber, you may wonder Is it possible to get too much? Arent there any, um, adverse events that might happen from going overboard with fiber? (Show of hands if youve ever seen the old SNL sketch Colon Blow.)Technically, according to Saweres, Theres no upper limit. While its possible you could experience unpleasant symptoms like bloating, gas, and (believe it or not) constipation from too much fiber, its unlikely youll reach this point through diet alone. Someexpertshave noted that these effects kick in around 70 grams of fiber per day - about twice the recommended daily value for men and nearly three times the DV for women. Unless you follow a vegan or raw diet or are taking a serious supplement, you probably dont need to worry. So bring on the beans and greens - and heap up a plate of disease-fighting power. This article originally appeared on Brit + Co.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 ritua ls that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
